About

VIacoustics was formed in August of 2001, with the mission of joining together a group of products and services to address the full range of needs for companies with product noise emission and acoustic measurement requirements.  Since that time, we've installed systems in some of the top acoustic laboratories in the country and helped many small companies start their initial acoustic measurement program.

Whether you're just starting to realize your company has a product noise or acoustic measurement need, or if your company has a fully integrated acoustic engineering process, VIacoustics has products and services to help you start, develop and perfect your acoustic program.

The VIacoustics' team is built on a foundation of strong technical experience and the highest quality products and services.

  • Jeff G. Schmitt, P.E., President has been a practicing acoustical engineer for over 30 years. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a Master’s of Science in Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, with Acoustical Engineering as his field of study. He served as President of Acoustic Systems, a major manufacturer of acoustical enclosures, from 1983 to 1995. He founded the Acoustic Systems' Acoustical Research Facility, an accredited acoustical test laboratory located in Austin, Texas.

In addition to being the principal engineer for the VIacoustics team, Mr. Schmitt also serves as an acoustics laboratory assessor for the National Institute of Standards and Technology NVLAP laboratory accreditation program.  He co-chairs the US ANSI working group on sound pressure and sound power standards and is a US delegate to ISO TC43/WG28, which maintains the ISO 3740 and ISO 11201 series standards on sound power and sound pressure.  He is also the current chairman of the inter-committee working group on international standards for the measurement of noise emissions from Information Technology and Telecommunications Equipment.

  • David Nelson, INCE Bd. Cert., P.E., of Nelson Acoustics has been a colleague of Jeff's for most of these 30 years.  After receiving his BS in mechanical engineering at MIT, Mr. Nelson went on to receive a Masters in Acoustics from the University of Texas at Austin.  Mr. Nelson is an acoustical consultant with over 30 years of experience in acoustics and noise control.  He provides a broad range of acoustical consulting services, including noise and vibration control for buildings and industrial plants, low-noise product design, sound quality analysis and design, integrated laboratory data acquisition systems, acoustical test facility design, and customized training courses.  Nelson Acoustic brings to VIacoustics' team a strong experience and technical background in acoustics, along with LabVIEW programming skills used to develop software tools for acoustic measurement on the National Instruments Hardware Platform.

  • Mike Schaffer, Lead Programmer for VIacoustics.  Mr. Schaffer has been developing LabVIEW based software for acoustic measurement for over ten years.  Mr. Schaffer builds the user interfaces that make the Nelson Acoustic Software products so easy to learn to use.

  • Joey Hook received a BS in Physics from Texas State University, and MSc in Acoustics and Music Technology from the University of Edinburgh. Joey has more than 10 years experience as a carpenter, over 15 years experience in live audio production, and is a lifelong musician and scientist.
  • National Instruments brings to the VIacoustics' Team the strength of a major manufacturer of hardware and software products for the automation and customization of data acquisition and dynamic signal analysis applications. Both Jeff and David have served as technical consultants to National Instruments. They developed the innovative hardware and software products provided by VIacoustics following three years of consulting work with National Instruments on the development of hardware and software solutions for the measurement of noise emissions of products.

  • ETS-Lindgren has been manufacturing the highest quality acoustical enclosures available for over 30 years and brings to ViAcoustics' Team a line of innovative and high performance anechoic and reverberant test chambers.  In 2006, ETS-Lindgren acquired Acoustic Systems, where both Jeff and David had worked many years.  We remain partnered with ETS-Lindgren to create the strong technical foundation that continues to support our products and laboratory testing services.

  • G.R.A.S. Sound and Vibration supplies the state-of-the-art measurement microphones and fixtures that serve as the ears of our acoustics measurement systems, and of course an acoustic system should have the best ears available.
