Overview
Trident Multi-Channel Acoustic Analyzer
VIacoustics Trident software is a real-time multi-channel, multiple analysis, acoustic measurement application for use in:
- Product noise emission measurements (sound pressure and sound power)
- Building acoustics measurements (sound transmission and sound absorption)
- Hearing sciences measurement applications (background noise, sound field calibration)
The Trident software application can be used in most any acoustic environment. Applications include:
- Laboratory measurements in anechoic and reverberation chambers
- Accredited laboratory environments
- In-situ and field acoustic measurements
- End of line product test measurements
Trident operates on National Instruments data acquisition hardware devices such as:
These devices provide a wide range on input voltage capabilities, sampling rates, interface types and price points for creating everything from low cost sound level measurement systems to high end laboratory test systems.
Multi-channel real time acoustic analyzer software for national instruments digital signal acquisition devices. Measure sound pressure, sound power levels, FFT analysis, ISO 532B* Loudness analysis, calibrated time waveform recording module.

Features
Trident’s ISO 532B Loudness Analyzer conducts loudness analysis in parallel with the sound level meter and FFT analysis. Both the overall loudness, in sones, and the specific loudness vs frequency or bark are available.
The Trident Limit Analyzer feature is designed to support end of line product test and other Pass/Fail type measurement applications. The Limit Analyzer uses the Reference Spectrum feature and adds a prominent Pass/Fail indicator for Upper Limit (product noise emission) or Lower Limit (alarms) detection. Limits may be set based on an Awtd sound level, or 1/N octave band levels, or both. Since Trident supports measurement bandwidths as narrow as 1/24 octave band, the limit analyzer can easily be used for detecting and the magnitude of tonal energy.
Trident provides a quick and easy export that allows users to export their data into MSExcel spreadsheets (or optionally to text files). Trident’s export controls allows you to place your data on any worksheet in the workbook and in any cell you specify. Full documentation with headers for configuration and calibration information associated with the data can be exported, or the data only may be exported.
The Trident MS Excel export allows users to have pre-configured analysis and reporting workbooks into which they can export their data. Once the data is exported, all analysis occurs and reports are generated.
Trident’s Reference Spectrum Feature is a powerful display tool that allows comparison of the current sound pressure levels to stored spectra. Reference Spectra may be stored in a spreadsheet for import into Trident, or stored into memory during a measurement session.
Trident’s Level versus Time module conducts reverberation time analysis for building acoustics applications.
The reverberation time analyzer contains a built in pink noise generator with synchronized cutoff to the data acquisition. Ensemble averaging of multiple reverberation time measurements are provided. A wide variety of data viewing options allows users to visualize the decay measurements.
The reverberation time analyzer has been developed to support laboratory and field applications. Sound Transmission Loss and Sound Absorption measurements in accordance with industry standards such as ASTM E90, ASTM C423 and ISO 140 are supported. Field measurements of sound transmission loss, noise reduction and reverberation time are also supported.
Trident’s sound intensity module operates in parallel with the sound level measurement features of Trident, allowing you to acquire both sound pressure levels and sound intensity levels simultaneously. Any pair (or two pairs) of microphones can be designated as a sound intensity pair in the configuration file. Multiple channels of sound intensity may be measured simultaneously. The application also support 3D intensity probes and wide band intensity probes, such as those provided by GRAS Sound and Vibration. Acquisitions can be triggered using the probe handle controls on GRAS intensity probes.
Trident’s calibrated time waveform recorder creates multi-channel calibrated audio WAV file recordings in parallel with the measurement functions of Trident. Calibration information is embedded in the WAV file header, allowing them to be post-processed using VIacoustics Sound Quality Analyzer, or MATLAB applications.
Recordings can be triggered manually or triggered on a sound level exceedance. A pre-roll buffer feature allows data recording to start prior to the trigger.
The Trident time waveform recorder is available as a stand-alone application or as part of the Trident software package.
Trident’s basic operational mode is the sound level meter mode. In this mode, Trident provides A-weighted and Linear Sound Level readings and, optionally, can provide 1/N octave band levels (1/1, 1/3, 1/6, 1/12 and 1/24 octave). The sound level meter mode provides a free running, exponential averaging real time analyzer operating mode and an Leq averaging measurement mode. Max Hold mode allows for detection of the maximum A-weighted and/or 1/N octave band levels obtained during an acquisition.
Trident’s scalable licensing allows users to purchase only the features they need for their measurement program, making Trident and National Instruments USB hardware an affordable option to a basic sound level meter for applications requiring only Awtd and/or 1/N octave analysis.
Trident’s FFT analyzer provides users with a high resolution, multi-channel FFT analyzer with graphical zoom and cursoring options. The FFT analyzer runs in parallel with the sound level meter and loudness measurement modes.
FFT resolution is user determined based on sampling rate and block size, allowing users to select the appropriate resolution for each measurement.
Both Energy and Harmonic Cursors are available for detailed FFT and order analysis applications.
